India’s 77th Independence Day

On August 15, 2023, India, the world's largest democracy, will celebrate its 77th Independence Day. After more than two centuries of British colonial rule, India became a free nation on this day in 1947. A long and arduous struggle for freedom came to an end at that historic moment, led by brave and visionary leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmi Bai, etc.

Independence Day Hustles

Independence Day is a momentous occasion in India. It is an occasion of national pride, commemorating the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of freedom fighters and martyrs who died for our nation's cause. The day begins with the hoisting of the Indian flag at Red Fort in Delhi, with Prime Minister paying homage to the deceased heroes.

Thereafter, a splendid parade by our armed forces, followed by cultural presentations from various states and regions takes place. The celebration continues throughout the country with flag hoistings, patriotic speeches, and numerous cultural performances.

A Glimpse of 77 years Journey

India’s Independence Day is not only a commemoration of the past but also a celebration of the present and a vision for the future. In the past 77 years, India has made remarkable progress in various fields such as science, technology, education, health, economy, culture, sports, and diplomacy.

Home to 17.76% of the total world population

With over 1.3 billion inhabitants, India is the world's second-most populous nation and seventh-largest by area, at 3.2 million square kilometers1. Despite being the 6th largest economy, India's cost of living is comparatively low compared to other countries such as the US, China and Japan.

Unique Cultural Practices

One of its best qualities lies in its favorable climate that attracts people from all around the world. Around 90% of its landmass can be used for inhabitation. India is a land of unparalleled color and beautiful scenery, steeped in captivating history. From the hustle and bustle of Mumbai to the serene coastlines of the Andaman Islands, this extraordinary nation is sure to delight all your senses.

Nuclear Power Index:

India stands at the fourth position out of 142 countries on the Global Firepower (GFP) ranking for 2022, with a PwrIndx score of 0.0979. This score is far from being 'perfect', with only US, Russia and China scoring higher than India's total power index.

The country is also a nuclear-weapon state with several ballistic missiles, satellites, rockets, spacecraft and space exploration missions to its name - with plans to send humans into orbit come 2024. India has approximately 164 nuclear weapons in its arsenal which can be launched by missiles, planes and more recently, submarines.

India conducted three tests in 1974 and 1998 and is estimated to have spent US$2.7 billion in 2022 to level up its nuclear capacity. In order to halve India's dependency on fossil fuels by 2032, the building of nuclear plants is viewed as a key part of the plan to utilize nuclear power constructively and as a means to get rid of pollution spread by burning fossil fuels.

In many locations, radioactive elements have been identified and nuclear reactors are being erected. To accommodate the expanding energy needs with the rising population, alternatives to non-renewable sources of energy must be found. The Centre has also authorized the establishment of 10 nuclear reactors in five distinct Indian states.

Giant of IT Sector:

India has emerged as a global leader in the field of information technology and software services. It has a large pool of skilled professionals and entrepreneurs who have contributed to the development of various sectors such as e-commerce, digital payments, social media and online education. With its highly skilled workforce, robust infrastructure, and favorable business environment, India has become a preferred destination for outsourcing and offshoring IT services. India's leadership in information technology and software services can be attributed to a combination of factors such as:

  • Government initiatives.
  • A skilled workforce.
  • Cost advantage.
  • Innovation.
  • Global presence.

With its continued focus on these areas, India is poised to maintain its position as a global leader in the IT sector.

Major Challenges with the Republic of India

India’s Independence Day is also an occasion to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the country. India faces several issues such as:

  • poverty.
  • inequality.
  • unemployment.
  • corruption.
  • pollution.
  • climate change.
  • terrorism.
  • communal violence and more.

According to the NSA Ajit Doval:

"India has a mindset that, where it hits, it punches below its weight. We don't have to punch above our weight nor do we have to punch below our weight. We have to increase our weight and punch proportionately"

Of course, the challenges need to be met with urgency and resolve. India also needs to leverage its strengths and potentials to achieve its goals and aspirations such as becoming a developed and prosperous nation, a global leader and influencer, a model and inspiration for other countries and peoples.

India’s Independence Day is thus a day to celebrate and appreciate the freedom and progress that India has attained and sustained and to pledge and commit to work together and contribute to making India a better place for Indians and others.
